Reading Broadens Children’s World View

How can teachers develop children's world view? How can one utilize English to broaden their knowledge of the world? Window on the World is a series of English-reading materials designed especially for fifth- to ninth-grade students that is easy to use.

There are five volumes in total: Each volume specifically targets each continent of the world, including the polar regions, and highlights myths, customs, history, arts, astronomy, and more. Contents are presented through various means—reports, letters, fables, conversations, poems, and others. The series teaches children to embrace the world and the different cultures and their customs from a sensitive point of view.

Each book begins from easy to difficult: from present tense, future tense, past tense, to comparative, perfect, and passive voice. Teachers can choose appropriate sections to teach depending on their student's proficiency level, or follow the books' recommended presentation order.

There are eight units in each book; each unit includes important vocabulary along with explanations in Chinese. There are also example sentences emphasizing the definition through context. Specific to each individual unit are short essay questions, multiple choice questions, and clauses . These types of questions help improve reading and comprehensive abilities. Finally, a vocabulary index and frequently-used words are attached at the end of each book, making review even easier for students.

An all-English reading CD is also available to further improve reading and listening comprehension.
